Southwest Career and Technical Academy opened their doors on Jan. 21, 2010 for their third open house.
“I thought no one was going to come because of the rain, but a lot of people came. Actually, I think over a hundred people came,” said sophomore Amanda Dunn.
Many families arrived late due to the weather.
Prior to the start of the open house, student volunteers were divided into their eleven program areas. Each building had ambassadors and volunteers advertising the school to potential SWCTA students.
“My job was to lure kids into the hospitality program, inform them about what we do, teach them what we do and get them interested,” Dunn mentioned.
The respiratory therapy program held demonstrations in their classrooms. Sophomores Vlad Zhitny, Evelynn Sheriff, and Enes Djesevec taught kids how to tie suture knots, while Billy Rom, Paolo Lee, and Justin Soria performed CPR demonstrations on plastic dummies, calling their presentation, “The PB&J CPR Resuscitation Station.”
In the hospitality and culinary hallway, student chefs prepared chocolate and vanilla cakes, while the hospitality students served the samples to families touring the hallway.
“About six hundred people came…It was definitely [successful],” said Mrs. Miriya Julian.
