To recruit freshmen for the next school year, student ambassador positions are open to students of all grade levels. An application is available online for those who wish to sign up. Currently, only 19 applications have been submitted.
“When student ambassadors represent our school, they really want to focus not just on their program area and the great things they’re doing there, but they want to highlight things that happen around campus—like PBL days, or what honors classes or AP classes are like,” Community Partnership Coordinator Craig Statucki said. “They should talk about the school environment as a whole.”
Students are encouraged to sign up for their former middle schools in order to better relate to incoming freshmen. Participants must provide their own transportation to and from the middle schools they are assigned to visit.
“We limit to three places and ask which middle school they went to because students generally shine in front of their former teachers and other students they used to know,” Statucki said. “It’s a chance for them to go back, like how we have our alumni come back in December to share their experiences.”
Those attending the recruiting events during the school day will be excused from the class periods missed. During the recruitment assembly, the ambassadors will introduce the program areas and give insight to their high school life at the middle school(s).
“At the event, we stood next to a table full of flyers for our school and we had a poster board that showed our program areas,” junior Jamie Alfonso said. “I wore scrubs as my professional attire and advertised our school.”
Applications for magnet and CTE schools now open until Jan. 10. The final middle school visit is at Charles Silvestri Junior High School.
“Listening to student ambassadors made me feel excited and like I was meant to go to Southwest,” freshman Johnathan Mijares said. “Having to make a big step from middle school to high school, they told me what the future holds and helped me form a dream of going to their high school.”
