Following Governor Steve Sisolak’s announcement that the statewide mask mandate would be dropped, districts were left with the choice as to if they’d keep the policy in schools. Clark County School District announced their decision on Thursday, stating that they will not require masks beginning at the “end of the school day.” However, on school buses, masks will still be required.

“I feel as if it is way too soon to be lifting mask mandates. I’m aware that people are ‘tired’ of wearing masks in public settings, but it’s for the safety of yourself as well as others,” senior Claire Cuddihy said. “No good can come from lifting the mandate this soon.”

Students and staff will be free to come to school maskless for the first time since the beginning of the pandemic, as other states loosen similar mandates. Though some feel that mask mandates were necessary to halt the spread of the virus, others argue the sharp decline in new cases shows we need to move on from the pandemic. The latter view is held by the vast majority of Americans according to a new poll, though mask mandates still retain majority support.

“I’m not a scientist; I don’t know what’s gonna happen to COVID-19, but I do think human nature repeats itself and people at large are done taking it seriously,” senior Owen Davis said.
