Five Iconic Video Game Characters By: Monserrat Mendieta

Decades ago, video games were simply 8-bit pixels on a screen, a controller, and vague instructions. Nowadays, video games mimic real-life visuals and have long, complex narratives. Within the history of gaming there have been characters that have yet to be forgotten by gamers who are approaching 10, 15, and even 35 year anniversaries. Here are some of the most famous gaming personalities.

1. MARIO FROM "SUPER MARIO BROS"

Mario first appeared on an arcade game known as "Donkey Kong," in July 9, 1981 and from the beginning his character has been tasked with saving damsels in distress.

2. GENERAL SHEPHERD FROM "CALL OF DUTY: MODERN WARFARE 2"

General Shepherd is known for his power and authority as he commands various branches within the U.S Army. What makes this character so memorable is his eventual betrayal and shocking ulterior motives that left players speechless.

In a turn of events, General Shepherd betrays his men and ultimately ends them.

3. LINK FROM "THE LEGEND OF ZELDA"

Link is regarded as the "Hero of Hyrule" and the main protagonist of "The Legend of Zelda" series. He was created by Shigeru Miyamoto and is a staple character of Nintendo. Most of his games involve banishing the villain known as Ganon by using the "Master Sword."

4. NATHAN DRAKE FROM "UNCHARTED"

Nathan Drake is a famous adventurer who has uncovered legendary finds such as "Henry Avery's treasure," the "Golden Abyss," the "Eye of Indra" and more. Created by Amy Hennig, his witty personality and charisma have made him a well-loved character.

Nathan Drake has ventured to different parts of the Earth in all of his games.

5. PIKACHU FROM "POKÉMON"

Even those who do not play "Pokémon" can recognize Pikachu, a mouse with electric abilities. Pikachu was designed by Atsuko Nishida and Ken Sugimori. What makes him so popular is his cute appearance and his presence in almost every "Pokémon" game.
