Vietnam is a country with various traditional foods. Aside from the popular pho, there are many other dishes that are as delicious, but are less known. Here are a select few of the foods that I think you should consider trying to make at home.
1. Bánh Canh
Bánh canh is a very popular dish in Vietnam. The ingredients are thick round noodles made from tapioca flour and tender pieces of pork cooked in a flavorful broth. You can load it up with extra toppings like basil and chili peppers. It can be served dry or with the broth.
2. Bún Bò Huế
Bún bò huế or bún bò is a Vietnamese soup containing rice vermicelli, which is a type of rice noodle, stirred in with beef. Its name comes from the city of Huế in Vietnam. The dish is popular for its balance of spicy and salty flavors.
3. Bánh Hỏi
Bánh hỏi is a Vietnamese dish made with vermicelli noodles topped with chopped scallions or garlic chives sautéd in oil. It is served with a complementary meat dish like fried pork sausage called Nem nướng.
4. Bánh Mi
Bánh mi is a traditional Vietnamese sandwich that can be topped with chili peppers and cucumbers. It is a popular street food in Vietnam because of its simplicity and inexpensiveness.
5. Bánh Xèo
Bánh xèo is a crispy rice pancake filled with meat and vegetables. The name refers to the loud sound the rice batter makes when it is poured into the hot skillet. It's savory and made of rice flour, water, and turmeric powder.
