As part of the newly ratified teacher contract, Clark County School District (CCSD) approved the early start calendar which is scheduled to begin the 2017-2018 school year. School will start on Aug. 1 for administration, Aug. 9 for teachers and Aug. 14 for students. The school year for students will end on May 22.
“I honestly would not mind starting school early,” sophomore Kyle Elder said. “If I am able to take midterms before Winter Break, that would be awesome. I would love to fully enjoy my two week vacation knowing that I won’t have to stress over exams afterwards.”
Per the traditional calendar, school begins for administrators and staff on Aug. 14, and on Aug. 28 for students.
“The only negative I see at this point to starting two weeks earlier in August is with our community culture,” Assistant Principal Trish Taylor said. “Since Clark County has always started school on the same calendar, the community is used to school starting at the end of August.”
Semester exams will also be taken the week before Winter Break.
“I am personally neutral,” Taylor said. “Finishing the first semester prior to Winter Break is a positive. It allows for a stress-free Winter Break for both students and teachers alike. Any teacher will tell you that a two week gain in instructional time is tremendous.”
