Summer break, winter break, and spring break are all school vacations that we, as students, look forward to and count down the days until arrival.

Fall breaks are generally scheduled during the same week that Columbus Day is celebrated, like Gilbert Public Schools, which is usually the second Monday of October. Some schools are unfortunate in only celebrating Columbus Day instead of the full school week, or neither, like Clark County School District.

When deciding whether a school should have a fall break, schools have to look at the school year calendar. It is legislative law that schools have 180 days of instruction. If a fall break was instituted, we’d have to make up the days missed over the fall break and this would extend the school year into the summer.

Although there are many “3-day-weekends” and even a “4-day-weekend”  in between the month of October and the month November, the fact that they are all segmented does not provide the same satisfaction as a full week.

We believe that Clark County School District should adopt a fall break.

Normally, the fall is jam-packed with a variety of events that can drive one mad. And we’re not just talking about the students, but teachers and parents as well. For instance, there are many school trips that happen during the month of November. Additionally, students have just received their first quarter grades, and are gearing up for second quarter. A fall break would be a great time for students to work ahead and enjoy the fall conferences, and for teachers to catch up on grading.

With the amount of school work, homework, and extracurricular activities that students participate in, there are times where a break is simply needed. In combination with having two straight months of school without a break, fall break would give us a much needed rest. Considering at the end of each second, third and fourth quarter we are given a week long break, it would make sense to be given a rest in the fall as well.

A fall break would be a good idea for schools (with a large emphasis on high school). Fall is a beautiful season, which does not deserve to be ignored. From the changing of the leaves, to the chilling of the air, a break from school is requested.
