Signing up to volunteer for the final exam project sheet in English 101, senior Regan Thomas begins creating her rubric. Students can decide which organization they would like to volunteer for or send a care package if they chose to do outreach. “For this project, I decided to reach out to the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation. This organization raises money and awareness towards people living with type one diabetes,” Thomas said. “I am really excited for this project because I love getting involved with the community and giving back through community service. Rehearsing the skills needed to do clinicals, senior Shinikee Garcia and Vincent Garcia check senior Michael Ennis’ pulse. Students began clinicals on Friday and will be learning the perks of being a CNA. “At first, I was nervous to go to clinicals because it’s very different interacting with a mannequin or a classmate you’ve known for a while compared to actual patients,” Garcia said. “However, when I got to the facility everyone was welcoming and the residents were really nice. Staying true to her roots, artist Hope Tala released a new album called “Girl Eats Sun,” with a bold fusion of Latin and R&B genres and figurative-filled lyrics.
Students kicked off the new unit in COM 102 starting with a discussion on issues, such as parents controlling their child’s career choices. Gaining insight through each others responses, students learned more about careers and the pathway to success. “I think that this unit is going to be really helpful in the future. With Nursing students done with general lectures, students who passed the EOC are now able to do an OSHA certification course to help introduce workfield protocols.
Counselors have been scheduling Google Meets with freshmen, sophomores and juniors to decide their schedules for the 2022 school year. Counselors included videos with the Google Form to help students start making the right decision regarding picking electives with information about important courses and suggestions based on grade levels. “Read the course catalog to get the [specific class] description, talk to the teacher who teaches the courses you are interested in, talk to other students who have had the course, and ask your counselor. Academic counselors have been working with students in order to begin the course selection process for next school year.
Using fake patient files to diagnose different cardiovascular disorders, students in Anatomy & Physiology have been studying blood cells and how they affect the human body. Through this unit, students have applied what they know in a real-life scenario to better prepare for future careers pertaining to the medical field. “Since I am in the Respiratory Program, doing these worksheets have been kind of cool because we get to actually look at a blood sample and use our knowledge to detect underlying conditions or other health associated issues,” junior Isabell Min said. After nearly spending the whole year online, students are finally transitioning to a learning model that will allow certain students to be back on campus. Students were sent an email the previous week specifying which cohort they were placed in and a follow up link if students would like to change. “The other schedule put me in a consistent routine by now, so I’m kind of upset that we changed it so abruptly and just for the last quarter, ” junior Isabell Min said. “However, I’m excited for the fourth quarter and hopefully things will be normal by the beginning of my senior year.” Art Credit: Monserrat Mendieta

Juniors in the Nursing Assistant program are focusing on reviewing different content standards to study for the end of course exam. Creating individual sections that contain information regarding the three separate diseases, burns as well as the functions of the various elements in the integumentary system, junior Isabell Min made a simple, yet effective brochure. students have been given 15-20 minutes at the end of every class to finish. “Although this project took me quite some time, it helped me learn about many intriguing skin diseases I didnt even know existed,” junior Isabell Min said.

With the help of the National Honor Society’s tutoring system, students can easily ask for help online with any subject. Whether it be math or science, NHS members can assist students with academics to improve the online school experience. “With everyone learning from home, NHS wanted to make help from peers more accessible by bringing our annual tutoring service online,” junior NHS President-elect Kirsten Hofilena said. “Learning from a screen can present its challenges so we made sure to make navigating online an option for discussion with our tutors. Transitioning from middle school to high school is already difficult, but having the added dynamic of trying to keep relationships with your previous friends can be one of the hardest aspects.
Practicing her speech on female harassment, junior Lizeth Ontiveros makes sure to include hand gestures at chest level. Students needed to include hand gestures, use an expressive voice, and keep a consistent pace, to earn a good grade. “Being in COM 101 while online is a little bit conflicting because we can’t physically be there to express ourselves for our speeches,” Ontiveros said. “However, I am excited to get into speeches and especially the first one because I am passionate about my topic on [female] harassment and I am looking forward to delivering it.”Photo Credit: Lizeth Ontiveros

Taking a different turn this year, teacher Henry Castillo works around internet issues and adjusts guidelines for delivering speeches at home.
Distance education has presented many challenges, including the uncertainty of how physical education courses will work. Students will still have to do physical activity through fitness logs, as well as complete modules to learn the importance of exercise. “I would say I was a bit bummed we wouldn’t be returning to school in person, but in times like we just keep moving forward,” senior Christina Chen said. “Lifetime Sports is a more laid back class and the daily question quiz, as well as weekly lessons, are pretty reasonable and easy.”  Photo Credit: Rosalie Schmitt

During her class overview, Anatomy & Physiology teacher Mary Breslin includes a slide of websites she plans on using in first semester. More technology tools will be integrated into coursework to increase interactivity and to aid in learning as the year progresses. “When students work together and collaborate, they help one another learn more effectively; therefore, to encourage more student participation, interaction and collaboration, I am using these other programs,” Anatomy & Physiology teacher Mary Breslin said. “Nearpod allows a teacher to incorporate many different student response activities so that you can check for understanding in real-time during a lesson.
