2021 Sweet Tooth Contest

90 degree weather is nothing when you have ice cream

Spring time has arrived, the sun is up for longer and the heat is slowly rising. With all that in mind, we all have our go-to sweet treat spots to cool us down, whether it may be a shaved ice spot, ice cream or even boba shop. We would like to know the top three places you stop by when you have a sweet tooth during these warm months.

LAST WEEK IN SPORTS: 11/4-11/11
Painting their pumpkins during FCCLA’s annual pumpkin painting meeting, juniors Aki Javier and Rizzael Maniego work alongside each other. The members were able to choose their own designs when decorating their pumpkins. “I wanted to win the best pumpkin [award],” Maniego said. “I tried painting Starry Night by Vincent Van Gogh and I feel that it turned out pretty good despite the short amount of time we were given.”

Trunk or Treat Returns
Demonstrating discipline and elegance, junior Ashton Yim warms up before starting his daily wushu practice. Warming up prepared Yim’s body before his real training began. “You have to think about it as a transitioning phase,” Yim said. “Before warming up, our joints, muscles, and mind are cold which can lead to injuries. Warming up helps the athletes to get prepared for big ranged movements. For my sport, this is especially necessary. Warming up would prevent me from dislocating, tearing, or fracturing bones, muscles, and joints. One small mistake and it could cost you your career. No muscle or joint can adjust into a heavily dynamic movement after you’ve sat down for seven hours of schooling.”

"Yeah, I was following the elections really closely," junior KJ Palacios said. "With the results, I think we failed our own citizens. I can't believe so many people acknowledge the person that Trump is and still voted for him regardless. He's pretty much against me as a person, and it affects most of my friends. We're immigrants, we're part of the LGBTQ+ community. I think our near future is going to be terrible."

Posing for a photo at last year’s Fall Rally South, Key Club members captured their excitement while at Six Flags Magic Mountain. This year, they are prepared to go once again and strengthen the bonds within the club. “The very first time I went, the first ride we went on we decided to go on it as our starter because it didn’t look that scary,” President Ella Abilar said. “It ended up being like the most terrifying ride in the park, it was really scary and freaked us out. Since then, it’s been a tradition to make that the first ride we go on every single time we go.”

Following the destruction of the Tropicana Hotel, The Mirage closes to prepare for major reconstruction. The city plans to build a baseball stadium and Hard Rock hotel in their wake. “We honestly already have a lot of stadiums nearby,” Environmental Science teacher Martha Horner said. “You have the T-mobile Arena, you have the Raiders stadium, and you have The Sphere close by as well. So there's already a lot of things right there on The Strip, and I could see a new sports stadium being another traffic issue.”

Preparing to scare people at the Trunk or Treat haunted house, senior Breeana Rodriguez dresses up as an acrobat. She was inside the haunted house throughout the whole event. “Hearing people scream is hilarious,” Rodriguez said. “I made sure to make my look as realistic as possible to scare people.”

Pencils sitting at the tips of yard sticks, Art 101 students draw each other’s faces. The students were learning how to be precise without holding the pencil directly in their hand. “She made up draw anyone in that group without looking at the paper,” senior Kai Cruz said. “It was overall funny to see how we could draw someone without looking at the paper.”

The genre of K-pop has spread across the globe, but Western and K-pop musicians are held to much different standards. K-pop idols are subject to harsh expectations like having pale skin, no acne and perfect bodies, while western artists typically have more freedom in terms of the clothes they wish to wear or the persona they project. “K-pop artists have it somewhat harder than Western artists,” sophomore Jaidelyn Wiseman said. “They both share similar experiences, but K-pop idols don’t really have the freedom of dating, their schedules, or how much they work and overall I just think that K-pop idols face a lot of harsher beauty standards and expectations than western artists.”

Standing next to Principal Donna Levy and UNR President Brian Sandoval, psychology and US history teacher Benjamin Lacombe showcases his new award. Lacombe received this award while teaching a class to the excitement of his students. “We were giving him a round of applause,” junior Valentina Escobar said. “I really think he deserves it.”

To prepare for the AP test, senior Andre Aquino is working out problems on the white board. He’s been practicing these problems for many weeks now, and thinks that he’s going to do well with the help of the teacher. “I think it’s definitely a very energetic way of teaching,” Aquino said. “I feel like it does get me ready for Calculus. I feel very awake when I’m in this class.”
