The last month in sports has been action-packed in every sense of the word, so let’s take a look back.
LOCAL SPORTS:
The Las Vegas Golden Knights won four of their seven games last month. They won against the Devils, Bruins, Canucks, and Blackhawks, while losing to the Rangers, Islanders, and Kings.
The Las Vegas Grand Prix will have some major modifications for this year’s race. The FIA has announced that the Grand Prix will take place two hours earlier than the previous two years, now being set for an 8 PM start. Road closures will be set to begin around 2:30-2:45 PM through the race weekend.
NFL:
The Philadelphia Eagles won the 2025 Super Bowl LIX by 18 points to the Kansas City Chiefs. KC won the coin toss and opted to kick first and hand possession to the Eagles on kickoff. Jalen Hurts’ 30-yard throw to Jahan Dotson in the late first quarter led to the first touchdown of the game before being discounted and leaving the Eagles with a first down at the 1-yard line. Hurts was able to make his way through the strong Chiefs’ defense and managed to score the actual first touchdown. Rookie Cooper DeJean intercepted what could have been a 30-yard pass from Patrick Mahomes, during the Chiefs’ second possession of the game, and ran it all the way down the field for a touchdown. By the end of the first half, Kansas City had yet to score and the Eagles were up by 24. Patrick Mahomes was sacked a total of six times during the game, leading to a failure to convert multiple fourth downs after ambitious rushes. Avonte Maddox’s block on Mahomes’ pass to DeAndre Hopkins on the fourth down set up what became an immediate touchdown for the Eagles.
With 2:43 left on the clock in the third quarter, Hurts threw a 44-yard pass to Devonta Smith which saw the ball enter the end zone immediately upon the catch. The Eagles were up by 34 points from Kansas City before they even managed to cross the 50-yard line. Xavier Worthy was the one to score the first touchdown for the Chiefs in the final minute of the third quarter, but a failed two-point attempt left the Chiefs still down by 28 points. The game finished with Philadelphia on top 40-22 after two more touchdowns and two-point conversions by the Chiefs.
NBA:
Luka Doncic played his first eight games with the Los Angeles Lakers last month. He was able to integrate himself into the team successfully and assist in six wins. Doncic dropped 14 points in his Lakers debut against the Utah Jazz, helping the team to win 132-113. Doncic played against his former team, the Dallas Mavericks, on the 25th and won after dropping his first triple-double with the Lakers.
Anthony Davis, on debut with the Mavs, had a non-contact injury that saw him leave the court mid-game. Davis strained his left adductor while attempting a rebound and is set to be out for “multiple weeks”.
Seattle has been added to the talks of adding an additional NBA team to the league, along with Las Vegas, which was already considering expanding. The NBA has not expanded with a new team since 2004 with the Charlotte Hornets. The current 21-year gap is the longest drought without a new team in NBA history.
MOTORSPORTS:
William Byron won the 2025 Daytona 500 ahead of Tyler Reddick and Jimmie Johnson. Toyota displayed a strange dominance that hadn’t been seen in any Daytona 500s before 2025. #19 Chase Briscoe sat on pole for the Great American Race, Toyota’s first pole at Daytona, while 23XI driver Bubba Wallace won Duel 1 and Denny Hamlin led many laps in Duel 2. Four of the top five were Toyotas with Byron being the only Chevrolet. President Donald Trump was present at the race, notably doing two laps around the track in ‘The Beast’ before the official pace car led the field to green.
Former Kick Sauber driver Zhou Guanyu was announced as a new Ferrari reserve and testing driver for the 2025 season. Zhou was previously in the Ferrari Driver Academy from 2015-2018 before joining the then-Renault Academy and joining Alfa Romeo in F1.
Formula 1’s Pre-Season Test at Sakhir was topped by Lando Norris on day one, Carlos Sainz on day two, and Max Verstappen on the final day. Sainz was the fastest overall in his new Williams after transferring from Scuderia Ferrari where he gave up his seat to seven-time world champion Lewis Hamilton.
