Coyote Cafe reopened their doors October 9, introducing a revamped work flow and menu that will differ on the weeks the cafe is opened, featuring different international cuisines.
The cafe closed temporarily due to the departure of the hospitality teacher, leading to the hospitality department’s closure. As a result, the Culinary department prioritized the culinary course and how the program would progress for culinary students.
“In the past I only had my students for a single class period,” Culinary teacher Michael Hadobas said. “Now that I have them for a double block it makes our cafe activities so much easier and more efficient.”
The reopening of the cafe gives hands-on experience for Culinary II students. Students will collaborate alongside their peers to create fresh lunches that will be sold at the student store when available, Wednesdays for teachers and Thursdays for students. From French, to Hawaiian and Japanese, students and staff can expect a variety of different cuisines.
“I want to simulate a real kitchen environment as much as possible,” Hadobas said. “[It gives] my students training in production techniques on top of teaching them how to cook. A big job is to help students gain employability skills, so running our cafe is a great way to teach that.”
Full portioned lunches are currently available to staff through online reservation forms, and delivered to them by a culinary student. Half portioned lunches can be purchased by students through the student store. The date student lunches will occur is to be announced via the morning announcements posted on Route-131.
“The format of Teacher Cafe / Student Cafe is new this year, we haven’t always done that in the past,” Hadobas explained. “So far my students have been enjoying it and it has been an ideal schedule, so I think we will keep this format.”
Alongside weekly lunches, the cafe will be selling both chocolate chip and M&M cookies for $2.
“Those cookies are very delectable,” sophomore Evelyn Kramar said. “Culinary does a great job perfecting them, and making sure you get your money’s worth.”
The cafe is still continuing to work on revamping its menu and making sure the flow of the cafe is efficient to secure its success and that customer satisfaction is being met. As the year progresses, students and staff can look forward to Coyote Cafe continuing its tradition beyond this school year.
“So far my students have been enjoying it,” Hadobas shared. “Coyote Cafe is a great experience for all of my students, I want to continue this as frequently as possible.”
