Six SWCTA Key Club members attended the annual district convention (DCON) in Anaheim, California from April 15 – April 17, to participate in workshops and elect new district officers for 2011-2012.
“I was looking forward to a never-ending chorus of cheering and screaming and meeting new people, as well as electing a new and passionate district board,” junior Jessica Lacaman said.
The convention began on Friday with four informational meetings regarding Key Club related topics such as charities, officer duties, and service. The night ended with an address from keynote speaker, Harvey Alston, a motivational speaker who spoke about happiness, self-respect, and self-improvement.
“Harvey Alston’s speech was extremely inspiring, because he has been in our position before and made us look past our struggles in order to be happy,” junior Justine Ipac said.
Members attended caucus sessions and listened to candidates’ speeches on the first half of Saturday. Immediate past president Judy Jauregui and president Kristelle Dealca were part of the House of Delegates from SWCTA.
“The thought of Diana Nguyen ending her district governor term saddens me, because she was such an enthusiastic leader. The newly elected governor and board have big shoes to fill; however, I’m sure they can achieve it,” Jauregui said.
On Saturday, YouTube star AJ Rafael performed songs from his upcoming album. Later in the evening, an awards ceremony resulted in Division 28, SWCTA’s division, winning numerous accolades, and concluded with a governor’s ball.
“I loved that AJ Rafael performed, and the awards hyped up everyone with spirit and cheer. Plus the governor’s ball was a good way to meet new people,” sophomore Nicole Brigola said.
The convention ended on Sunday with a farewell address.
