Best Plants for Beginners by Tishie Nyitray

During quarantine many people became interested in plants, however it can be very difficult to find the plants that work best for you and your lifestyle. Here's a beginners guide for everyone that is interested in plants. (All of the plants listed can be easily found at your local nursery.)

Snake Plant

Called "Snake Plant" or "Mother-in-Law's Tounge," this houseplant is one of the most low-maintenance and durable options for beginners. They can handle low light and you only need to water when the soil is dry to the touch.

Monstera Deliciosa

If you are looking for a larger plant, "Monstera Deliciosa" or "Swiss Cheese Plants" are great. Their unique leaves are trendy and add a pop of style to any room. They prefer bright to medium indirect light and you can water every 1-2 weeks.

Succulents

When all else fails, get a succulent. They come in many different shapes and colors and are almost impossible to kill. Water only when the soil is 100% dry. Succulents also love light, so make sure yours is getting around 6 hours of sun each day.

Pothos

Pothos are a fan favorite, because they are so easy to take care of and grow very quickly. They come in many variations including, "Golden Pothos" and "Marble Queen Pothos" and can easily propagate in water. Pothos can tolerate low light and water once the soil is dry.

How to Propagate Pothos in Water

  1. Start by getting your supplies ready; you will need your Pothos plant, a clean knife and a jar of water.
  2. Find a healthy main stem.
  3. Snip 4 to 6 inches of a healthy stem and make sure it has 2 or more existing leaves.
  4. Place your cutting your jar of water and make sure it has enough light.
  5. Enjoy your new Pothos plant!
