“If I could be an animal, I would be a cat because they’re so cute and lazy,” Sophia Ramirez (‘26) said. “I love when cats are so silly and sleepy.”

“I really want to travel to Vietnam because that is where I was born and I would love to meet my family again,” Ryan Duong (‘25) said. “The food and hearing others’ stories brings me back memories that no one in America would have ever experience and I think that it would be really cool to relive that. “My favorite thing about Southwest is the people and the programs,” Plas Borner (‘26) said. “I’m in Multimedia, but now that I am a junior, I get offered the option to do 2D Animation, which is something I would want to do in my adult career. I want to be an animator so I can own an animation studio.”

“My experience at Southwest has been inspiring and creatively fulfilling,” Yvanna-Raphael Abarico (‘27) said. “The fashion program has allowed me to develop my skills and explore my passion for design while collaborating with like-minded students and learning from talented teachers.”

“I’d say my favorite hobby is listening to music,” Jarred Maverick Garcia (‘27) said. “It always helps me study and having that calm music in the background to help me focus, especially R&B songs. I think it’s really cool to listen to a music artist express their feelings through songs and I’d sometimes even relate to them.”

“If I could live in any country in the world besides the United States, I would choose Switzerland,” Feruth Yemane (‘26) said. “Over the summer, I met a family friend that is from Switzerland and I learned that they’re one of the happiest countries in the world. She told me how it’s very clean there and their schooling system is easy to understand so she actually feels like she gets an effective education. Lots of people from my ethnicity also live there as well so I feel like I would be happy if I were to live there and overall it would open my eyes to a new experience.”

“My favorite thing about being a Southwest student is the little things,” Derek Mondragon (‘25) said. “But what I like the most is just being able to see my friends and being able to learn.”

“My favorite song at the moment is ‘Cowpoke’ by Colter Walls,” Trinity Boyd (‘26) said. “It reminds me of when I go to Utah and go driving around with my dad in the fields.”

“My favorite item in my fridge has to be the almost empty Simply Lemonade bottle,” Reilly McCullough (‘27) said. “No one in my house has used the last of it for like a week now. It really means a lot to me.”

“My best concert experience was SZA. It was lit. My auntie got me VIP tickets because she runs the tickets over for MGM and I got VIP tickets,” Tyler Phui (‘26) said. “I got to see her super up close and I liked the fact that she played all of my favorite songs, it was just a vibe there with my cousin. SZA is awesome and ever since she dropped Snooze and that SOS album, I started listening to her more. She brings a different type of emotion at her concerts and she can really change the mood of the whole concert with just her voice.”

Placing his ball down, senior Luis De Casas takes a turn at the mini golf course designed like a cannon. The activity provided students a new hands-on experience outside of the classroom. “I’m not at great at golf,” De Casas said. “It’s difficult, especially aiming for a straight shot and just trying to get it to go through. I had fun today though, I got to golf with my friend and the weather’s nice out here.”

Preparing to scare people at the Trunk or Treat haunted house, senior Breeana Rodriguez dresses up as an acrobat. She was inside the haunted house throughout the whole event. “Hearing people scream is hilarious,” Rodriguez said. “I made sure to make my look as realistic as possible to scare people.”

Pencils sitting at the tips of yard sticks, Art 101 students draw each other’s faces. The students were learning how to be precise without holding the pencil directly in their hand. “She made up draw anyone in that group without looking at the paper,” senior Kai Cruz said. “It was overall funny to see how we could draw someone without looking at the paper.”

To prepare for the AP test, senior Andre Aquino is working out problems on the white board. He’s been practicing these problems for many weeks now, and thinks that he’s going to do well with the help of the teacher. “I think it’s definitely a very energetic way of teaching,” Aquino said. “I feel like it does get me ready for Calculus. I feel very awake when I’m in this class.”

Preparing her notes for her speech, junior Mikayla Manaligod tackles her topic. She focused on refining her points before the class presentation.“We started with watching a video from last years speech and had us grade the speeches based on a few categories like nonverbal, hand gestures, posture, and tone,” Manaligod said. “Right now were just finishing our speeches up.”

After a long stretch of gameplay, senior Micah Tiongson takes a break to get a drink of water. Breaks are regularly taken to ensure students played to their full ability. “It was like 100 degrees and I was really thirsty,” Tiongson said. “You can risk getting heat stroke and passing out in this heat so I always make sure to drink water.”
