The CCSD Board of Trustees has elected a new superintendent, Jhone Ebert. Ebert is the first official superintendent after Jesus Jara, who resigned from the role back in February of 2024.
The Board of Trustees searched for a new superintendent while Dr. Brenda Larsen-Mitchell fulfilled the temporary role as the interim superintendent. The board, through countless interviews and community discussions, selected multiple candidates to review their qualifications and pick a new superintendent. In the final meeting on March 13, Ebert was elected.
“I think her [past occupations] and history overall makes her really qualified,” Social Studies teacher Michael Woxland said. “Especially as a former CCSD worker and state superintendent, I believe she’s well equipped for the role. I really want to see her make radical changes to grading policies, attendance, and technology.”
Ebert is well equipped when it comes to public education, as she has held numerous roles in CCSD for over 25 years. She has helped aid in subjects such as proper and fair funding of schools and expanded the CTE programs. She is the first woman to become CCSD’s permanent superintendent, after being Nevada State Superintendent since 2019.
“I think it’s great we’re having our first female superintendent, as visibility matters,” Communications teacher Vivian Evans said. “I hope with the new superintendent we see a lot of beneficial changes to education so that children that are falling behind can get the help they need.”
Within the first days as the new superintendent, Jhone Ebert has proposed the plan of extending the school day, due to multiple grade levels falling behind in their education. She has also further drawn attention to her plan on how to fix teacher recruitment and retention.
“Shifting from a time-balance system to competency based system is not only going to help us with our [funding and return on investment], but [also] children knowing they are successful, and teachers knowing too,” Ebert said to KTNV Channel 13 Las vegas. “[They know] that they’re not moving a child on because of their grade or their age, but they’re moving the child forward because they’re ready and know the content and curriculum.
As the district superintendent, Ebert will take on many responsibilities that control how CCSD is operating and is managed, building towards the goal of monitoring what is strengthening and weakening student success, budget goals, and the overall vision for CCSD.
“Mrs. Ebert is very intelligent, very driven, and a very hard worker. She expects a lot from everybody, and she usually gets it.” Principal Donna Levy said. “[I believe] that she will bring back the belief that we’re all here for the same reason. [That is,] to educate the students of our valley. I think she will [push to] make sure all of CCSD falls in line and doesn’t forget that the mission is to educate the students that are in our school buildings. Until they achieve it, she won’t be happy [and will continue to push until the goal is met].”
