The administration will hold a new student induction event on April 24 where all incoming students and their parents or guardians will be able to tour the campus. The event will take place from 5:30-6:30 p.m. in the gym.
Incoming freshmen will have the opportunity to meet their program teachers and administrators who will be there to inform them of their expectations.
“We are going to introduce ourselves, our background, and our education. We also will go over the program overview and classes required over the next four years,” Fashion teacher Levi Harbison said. “We are going to talk about the importance of CTSOs like FCCLA or TSA, as well as different opportunities, course fees and materials for students.”
The event has been planned by Magnet Coordinator Ryan Zaro. Despite being a new faculty member, he wanted to bring a creative spin and a new event for incoming freshmen.
“I’m looking forward to meeting families because that is something our school lacks in. I really wanted to create a welcoming environment,” Zaro said. “I really want them [freshmen and families] to see how wonderful our school is and the opportunities that our students are awarded. They will hopefully be able to get a feel of the school.”
During the orientation, the administration will review the magnet contract and reinforce the policy with the students.
“We have never had the opportunity to address rules with both parents and students together, and I think it will be beneficial,” Assistant Principal Eric Gant said. “Coming to this school is a privilege, and there are certain levels of accountability here. I think it’s important that the students and parents both hear.”
Showcasing clubs, organizations, and merch, this event will promote all parts of the school to new families and students.
“I want to introduce the idea of being involved. We are going to have clubs and organizations there too. They’re going to have tables for their clubs as well as program teachers,” Zaro said. “I’ve also redesigned some tech merch that I feel like are more to the liking of students of this generation; I’m excited to start some new things that have not necessarily been done before.”
The Art Show will also be happening during the freshman induction event, featuring pieces by students of all grades.
“I think it’s good that we have an annual event that the freshman and parents can see in action,” Art teacher Rachel Guichard said. “Hopefully, students and their families can see what our school has to offer and maybe even sign up for art class at some point.”
Zaro is hopeful that this will become an annual event for the incoming freshman class.
“I would love to have more teachers, like in the future I want to turn it into a block party-esque vibe. Other schools do this, and it was important for me when I came into this role to try innovative things,” Zaro said. “I’m so excited for this event to present our school to already accepted students.”
