In order to ensure safety when driving, sophomore Automotive students were introduced to the parts that make up the brakes in a car.
“Right now, they’ve actually been doing really well,” Automotive teacher Bertrand Potts said. “They’ve been inspecting the brakes, listing down the components, writing reports, and then coming to me with their advice or their suggestions on what parts need to be replaced.”
The process of taking apart and replacing the brakes of a vehicle are essential for a car to be in working order.
“Constant use of brakes on a vehicle causes them to wear down, so over time you need to replace things like the brakes and the tires so they’ll be easier to use,” sophomore Spencer Knight said. “Replacing the brakes also provides an extra layer of safety which is why they’re so important. Without the brakes, your only protection besides the car frame is gone.”
Knowing every detail of the brake components demands careful attention; one wrong move and the brake is unable to function.
“The job itself isn’t that hard; it’s just time-consuming, but with practice the process becomes way faster,” sophomore Aaden Espinosa said.
With their newly gained experience in maintaining brake systems, students have built foundational knowledge that will assist them with their future careers in the industry.
“Brakes are among one of the most popular things that you need to replace on your car; you need to be able to stop and control yourself on the driveway, and without brakes, that’s just not possible,” Knight said. “It’s important for me, and for everyone in my class [to learn about these] if I want to become an automotive technician, and if I can implement these skills that I learn now, it will be useful in the near future.”
