After years of having teams composed of different grade levels, Student Council has decided to take a new approach.
“Last year, we had free range with who can play in the game, but since there’s such limited spots we did want to give seniors priority,“ Junior Class Representative Selinalei Hamilton said. “Now it’s exclusive and it will probably stay that way. It can be something that the rest of the classes can look forward to during [their] senior year.”
Being one of the only sports events hosted within school for students to compete, some students are disappointed with this new implementation.
“I think it’s alright for the seniors to play, but I would like to play again this year.” sophomore Mylana Param said. “My friends were going to join, and I was excited to play with and against them like last year, but with the new change, it was disappointing. Regardless, I’m looking forward to the game and food. I didn’t get to buy any snacks last year, so this will be a fun opportunity.”
Some students approve of the change for seniors to have the opportunity to play for their last year.
“Especially since it’s our final year, It’s like a type of way to get us more involved,” senior Ervien Llidan said. “Being selected and playing for Southwest is amazing since we don’t have sports. It’s cool that we get to represent our school in some type of way and enjoy the year and have some more memories.”
Several Clubs such as Key Club, HOSA, FBLA, and FCCLA, will be selling food and merchandise during the game.
“We are selling spam musubi from Unko Franks Hawaiian BBQ for FCCLA,” VP of Public Relations Janna Aurea Bouffard said. “Our main goal with our fundraising is to raise enough money to go to [our] state conference in March, so every time we fundraise, we try to get a lot of funds because we lost our funding from the district, and normally they are the ones that would pay for us for our state conference, but this year they are not.”
Studio K (Kpop Club) will be performing a total of three songs: Magnetic by ILLIT, Love 119 by RIIZE, and Sweet Venom by ENHYPEN.
“We wanted to dance to both girl and boy groups for our performance,” choreographer Lydia So said. “We chose ‘Magnetic’ because it is a very popular and well-known song, and ‘Love 119’ has a beat similar to Magnetic. We also wanted to know what song the members of Studio K would like to dance to, which is why ‘Sweet Venom’ was chosen.”
Students will be released from the field after the game ends. The game will last from 12:00 – 1:25 p.m.
“PA/DA is a long-standing tradition at Southwest, and it’s something that I think we lost sight of what it really means,” Student Council adviser Michael Woxland said. “With this assembly and game it creates a difference and a connection to the school that is sometimes a little bit lacking and I hope moving forward with this tradition it helps students feel more connected to this school and more connected to their programs here at Southwest.”
