Vice President Kamala Harris will be visiting Southwest CTA to give a presentation on school and gun violence, following the shooting at the University of Nevada Las Vegas.
She’ll be speaking on Monday, April, 15 at 1 p.m. in the campus gym. A total of 300 audience members will be present at the event, composed of students, teachers, and administrative staff. Student audience members will be chosen on a first-come, first-serve basis.
“I’m encouraging all my students to sign up to be audience members because she’s a female vice president. That’s the highest authority that a woman has been able to get in this country,” Social Studies teacher Jessica Kelly said. “She’s also biracial. It’s an important representation for all people.”
Those attending are expected to adhere to the CCSD Code of Conduct. Students will not be permitted to leave during the event.
Students will be given the opportunity to ask Vice President Harris questions pertaining to gun violence in the United States.
“It would be really interesting to bring up those cases [US v Rahimi and New York State Rifle & Pistol Association, Inc. v. Bruen] to her and just talked about the evident issues with guns and especially with like the UNLV shooting,” senior Hemoigne Sarmiento said. “It would be really nice just to feel safe in schools and to have another layer of protection with gun laws, just because it’s so easy to obtain a gun and the fact that the United States is notorious for having school shootings. I believe that that’s a very important problem. And I’m glad that Vice President Harris is addressing it.”
