As the demand for healthier eating alternatives increases, a surge of health and juice spots are popping up across Las Vegas. Taking advantage of the healthy climate, Squally’s Juice Bar & Cafe is creating a colorful and collaborative environment for people to relax, meet with others or simply enjoy some nutritious food.

Opening in early 2020, this small, chic cafe is original to the Vegas valley. From their adorable avocado logo, to the sticker-bombed interior, everything I had heard about them had me excited to try it out.

When you walk through the door, the first thing that stands out is the ample amount of greenery hanging and covering the walls. The brightly colored furniture, paintings, and knickknacks do their part to invite a sense of positivity within minutes of entering. Next to the couches are a variety of wellness books, magazines, and children’s classics, providing a cozy spot to learn something new. Their light fixtures look like hanging vines with multi-sized light bulbs at the end, which I thought was extremely creative and appeared almost mystical. Their menu, inscribed neatly on several chalkboards with tiny drawings of food options, includes teas, juices, shakes, and smoothies, as well as toasts, bowls, sandwiches and waffles.

The environment in the cafe quickly became my favorite part of the whole experience. Staff members were lively and had excellent knowledge of the menu. Also the music playing in Squally’s was a mixture of feel-good pop and upbeat hip-hop, which further fueled the positive energy of the cafe. Overall, their space serves as a great after-school hangout spot or place to do homework.

The first thing I ordered was a “Classic Avo Toast” ($9.50) served on a wooden board including toasted wheat bread, vibrant green avocado topped with microgreens, pickled red onions, and salt and pepper. It was delicious; a classic done well, however, there was nothing too special about the dish. It seemed like just an ordinary version of the dish that had the potential to be ramped up. Nonetheless, the pickled onions on top were flavorful and added a nice color and taste. I was just looking for something that stood out a bit more.

Next, I tried the “Green No 1” juice ($8.00) with celery, cucumber, ginger, green apple, kale, and lemon in it. This drink was super light and refreshing. Per expectation, many green juices are usually bitter, but to my surprise it was extremely palatable and had just the right amount of sweetness. This juice was a satisfying and energizing morning drink and I highly recommend it to those who rarely like classic green juices.

I also tasted the “Energizer” juice ($8.00) which included orange, strawberry, red apple, ginger, and celery. Although the “Green No 1” is still the top-reigning drink, this juice was incredibly tasty, having more sweetness and a thicker consistency. There was foam on top, which gave the drink a bubbly texture when mixed. I am personally not a huge fan of super sweet juices, but this one had a nice flavor and unique consistency.

Lastly, I ordered a “Super Green Choco Shake” ($9.00) with whey protein. This shake was so delectable and creamy that it tasted like a dessert. I especially love when I can eat vegetables and not even taste them, and still get a lot of quality protein. The dark-chocolatey taste combined with the creamy vegetable vanilla base was unexpectedly sublime and perfect for a hot day. Like many other items on their menu, there is an option to make the order vegan-friendly, this one having a non-dairy protein substitute if desired.

Overall, I am grateful to have found this adorable hidden gem. Their atmosphere is overflowing with positivity and wellness, which instantly put a smile on my face. Besides some of their more basic takes on food, I respect their ingenuity when it comes to drinks and shakes. There is no doubt I will be returning to Squally’s to read a good book and try new nutritious food and drinks.
