Kicking off the new semester, the Student Council held its fourth Coyote Congress of the school year for participating students and clubs.
The session began with all attendees filling out an attendance form before jumping into club introductions and recaps. The participating clubs and Student Council classes announced the following:
- The Class of 2025 has finalized their senior class gift. They are currently working on February’s Senior Crown Day, which will be on Feb. 25, and an upcoming graduation committee meeting.
- The Class of 2026 and 2027 are finding fundraisers for the rest of the year up until fall.
- The Class of 2028 is working on finalizing their upcoming Freshman Thursday event.
- Black Student Union (BSU) is working with Student Council for Winter Fest, which will take place on Jan. 24. They also have something planned for Martin Luther King Jr. Week.
- Jam Club is working on publicity, and is preparing for this year’s Coyote Coachella.
- The National Honor Society (NHS) is preparing for induction season, which will officially start next week. Sophomores and juniors looking to apply should expect letters soon. Their next meeting will be on Jan. 15, with guests from Literate Earth Project joining.
- Sonnies and Smitskis Club will be having their first meeting on Jan. 10.
- (TSA) will be starting their World’s Finest Chocolate fundraiser next week.
- The Environmental Club is planning on celebrating Earth Day in April through a spirit week. They are also in the process of researching different fundraisers.
Seniors should expect to hear date and venue announcements for prom in April.
During the public comments section of the meeting, a representative from Environmental Club asked for assistance on finding potential fundraisers.
“You can ask any of the people up here who have done fundraisers,” Student Council advisor Brandon LaFountain said. “You can ask Student Council what they do. If [it’s] something that you’re really interested in, like food or maybe items you want to sell, there’s all types of different things. So if you want to come by and ask what we’ve done, we can go over that for you.”
Principal Donna Levy also mentioned the Activity’s Office in B Building as another resource, but warned that opportunities to sell food at lunch have become limited.
No other questions were asked during the public comments segment. PA Vice President Brianna Scherschel then transitioned into covering “old business,” or events that occurred before Winter Break.
“Some stuff that’s obviously passed are semester exams, so I hope everyone’s exams went well,” Scherschel said. “We also had our spirit week with BSU, so it was fun to see people participating and showing up for that. We also had Friendsgiving back in November, which was great. I think it’s always so fun to get to meet up with all the other clubs and just make that kind of connection, [instead of] just standing up here talking to you.”
Additionally, Scherschel covered “new business,” or school events that are upcoming.
“We do have Winter Fest, which is in two and a half weeks,” Scherschel said. “We have Nevada Peace Week. Our president and treasurer are at Zone Conference, which is a meeting for Student Council kids to make connections with each other and grow as leaders. We the People[‘s state competition], we wish you good luck in that. They came in first place at their district competition.”
The “new business” also extended into February, with mentions of King and Queen of Hearts and Warm Fuzzies. Student Body Historian Emily Boothe gave further information on King and Queen of Hearts.
“Look out for an email from your adviser soon,” Boothe said. “Even though it’s ‘King and Queen,’ your two representatives can be two girls, two boys, or however you’d like to do it.”
This session of Coyote Congress lasted from 1:30 to 1:45, with 32 attendees total. Coyote Congress is held on the first Tuesday of each month, with their next meeting being on February 4.
