In the video production studio, students are creating videos using tripods and their phones to practice essential videography skills. They have worked for a while now to create their videos and make them as effective as possible. “Some students have decided to do a PSA about keeping our campus clean, or about drugs and their bad effects, so it’s a wide gamut of different subjects,” Video Production teacher Ernesto Zita said.

In Video Production I, students are creating videos in the C building hallway using a variety of different equipment. Students are working in groups to create Public Service Announcements (PSAs) with the goal of educating students about certain topics.

“Today in particular, they’re working on their first project, and they’re just using their phones for the first one, because we haven’t really gotten into camera operation yet,” video production teacher Ernesto Zita said. “They decided what they think is important to other students in particular within the school that they would like to get that message across.”

The students in the class are able to record in many different environments with their cameras.

“We can [leave] with permission, we just can’t leave the school premises,” sophomore Armando Aguilar said. “We have a shot in the bathroom because our PSA is about staying in the bathroom for too long, so we have to wait for the bathroom to be empty. We have a lot of freedom.”

Zita teaches his students about videography by giving the class instruction, then letting them use what they’ve learned in a real life application.

“We’ve taken them through the whole process of pre-production, planning, script writing, and storyboarding before they actually went out to shoot a single frame,” Zita said. “I give them pointers on how to pull off some of the shots and storyboards that they plan and then let them go. I think they’re getting the hang of it.”

Several students enjoy working with cameras and learning aspects of video production.

“I’m pretty fond of video production,” sophomore Sebastian Huyng said. “I think the overall cinematography we’re learning in this class will be helpful to understand design as a whole.”

Along with learning about the technology and skills that go into making high quality videos, students also enjoy collaborating with each other throughout the project.

“I think that collaboration is a necessary part of the filming process,” Huyng said. “Getting multiple people and their ideas together is very important. It makes it easier to choose what we want to do in our group.”

With the class wrapping up this project, students have been able to reflect on their experiences.

“I love doing video production,” Aguilar said. “I love editing videos, and having the opportunity to get full hands-on experience has been a passion of mine.”
