In order to recognize student organizations that show school pride, Student Council (StuCo) is introducing the Coyote Club Spirit Award.
Clubs can work towards earning the award by participating in spirit weeks throughout the school year.
“We’re really hoping this motivates more clubs to get involved throughout the year, not just during big events,” StuCo adviser Michael Woxland said. “The goal is to celebrate the energy and passion that students already bring to Southwest.”
The award was inspired by StuCo’s own experiences in applying for state and national recognition.
“We want this to be a place that students actually want to be at,” Woxland. “We wanted to encourage clubs to be more involved on campus and to take ownership of the experience that we have here at Southwest.”
Key Club members are approaching the Coyote Club Spirit Award as another way to bring their energy to campus life.
“We’re choosing to participate because spirit is a very big part of our club,” Key Club President Marleena Tibayan said. “Other than community service, it’s one of the most essential things we do. We just like to capture that and bring it all together to create more of a community feel where students want to join in.”
Some club leaders have mentioned that the checklist for earning the award feels intimidating, which StuCo Student Body Secretary Danniel James Madamba anticipated.
“I know the checklist is a bit long this year,” Madamba said. “By next school year, I want to make it easier and more achievable for everyone.”
So far only one club has signed up, and other clubs have been undecided with whether or not they want to participate.
“We’re looking into participating,” Razon said. “Since HOSA is such a big organization here on campus, it’s important that we take part in schoolwide events and stay involved in the community… We have our blood drive coming up, and we’ve helped with Trunk or Treat. Events like those bring students together and let us give back to the community while showing school spirit.”
StuCo is continuing to look for more participants to join. The award will be given at the last assembly of the school year.
“Just take initiative and take charge,” Woxland said. “If you want to do something, you have the power to make it happen.”
