As part of the school’s annual tradition, Student Council is hosting a back to school assembly on August 23rd in the gym. Theming for the assembly is centered around popular television network Nickelodeon and spirit wear is determined based on grade levels.
“The purpose of the back to school assembly is to introduce new students to our clubs, rules, guidelines and overall, what our school has to offer,” Co-head Assembly Chair Zoe Nunez said. “It’s also a large icebreaker to see and get to know some of your peers. I look forward to seeing the wonderful cooperation and synergy of our clubs, student council, and introductions to our coyote community.”
The assembly is mainly targeted towards underclassmen to help them gain school spirit and serves as a transition to get them into the groove for the school year.
“I think the assembly is a good way to get back into the swing of things with school. I’m excited to see all the activities that Stuco has planned,” sophomore Natalie Velasco said. “The assembly last year was already really fun, and I’ve heard they improved it even more this year. I’m especially excited to see the dress code fashion show, as it was really funny last year.”
Several clubs, such as Key Club, FCCLA, and HOSA will be presenting during the assembly with the intent of gaining underclassmen as new members.
“We plan on using our time to promote all the benefits that Key Club provides, “ Key Club President Ella Abilar said. “Promoting events like RTC or FRS or showcasing the community and family that had been built within the club gives us the opportunity to increase member attendance during our first meeting. This helps potential members see what clubs are available and plan out which ones they’re really interested in joining.”
Junior and senior class attendance isn’t mandatory. If transportation is available, upperclassmen are allowed to leave early.
“With my busy senior schedule, it is nice to be able to have a short break for a day,” senior Jordan Vallesteros said. “I already have my open periods at the end of the day, but now I get to leave even earlier, giving me a chance to catch up on my homework that accumulates by the end of the week. Upperclassmen don’t really need to learn about the clubs offered here or policies, like the dress code, since we’ve already been here for years. So, I’m glad they’re giving us the opportunity to not attend if we wish.”
