Student Council (StuCo) is reviving the “Sadie’s” tradition as an indoor movie night to fill the gap of school events between winter break and prom.
Historically, Sadie’s was a semi‑formal dance in which girls were encouraged to invite their dates, a format that faded from campus four years ago due to low turnout. By moving away from the dance model, organizers hope to offer a low‑pressure social event that better fits student interests during the spring semester.
“[Sadie’s] has been super popular with a lot of other schools,” StuCo Student Body President and Logistics Head Chair Sienna Suarez said. “We saw the turnout and enjoyment from the last movie night. Everybody enjoyed it, so this was a perfect opportunity to bring the event back.”
The film Tangled will be screened in the gym on Feb. 20 from 5 to 7 p.m. with tickets being sold on stage during both lunches.
“[Sadie’s] was just an old tradition,” StuCo Co‑adviser Brandon Lafountain said. “It wasn’t the most entertaining or attended event because of the premise of Sadie’s and the school ended up canceling it. Then a bunch of students wanted something to come back during this period of no events and that’s when the idea to turn Sadie’s into a movie night came up.”
The revived Sadie’s is intended to draw more students and rebuild campus engagement as the semester continues. Everyone is encouraged to attend, especially juniors and seniors as they will find out the upcoming prom date.
“We are going all out for decorating,” Co-Chair of Logistics Alejandro Merino Rojas said. “Once you walk into the gym, the lunchroom will be decked out with decorations. Most notably, there’s going to be a taco truck, which is returning after being a big hit last movie night… We are revealing the prom date and then the prom theme [will be announced] during the Coyote Olympics assembly day, so stay on the lookout for those dates.”
StuCo members spent weeks designing posters and launching social media campaigns to explain the new movie‑night format.
“A month ago, we had a poll for a potentially new event and the majority of students voted for this specific event,” Rojas said. “We got a post up to get the school informed and advertisements are posted throughout the entire school.”
Multiple clubs, such as SkillsUSA, will also provide activities and concessions to enhance student experience.
“Representing SkillsUSA at movie night always feels so rewarding because we are giving back to the same community that rewards us,” SkillsUSA President Joyce Harveston said. “I feel more connected to the values of SkillsUSA when volunteering and representing our organization in general. We are selling soda, and honestly, our [goals] are to sell some and gain profit.”
Overall, while some students initially expected a dance, the reaction to the movie‑night format has been largely positive.
“Personally, I’m glad Sadie’s is gonna be a movie night rather than a dance,” junior James Warden said. “This allows the event to feel more casual with students, allowing introverted people among us to participate in fun school events without leaving their comfort zones. This [will] be my first school event. I hope for good food and a [calm] environment.”
