Having a Safe Super bowl By: Hannah Paine

Over the years, the Super Bowl has become less about the actual game and more about the party during it. COVID-19 has cancelled and changed many events within the past year, so why should the Super Bowl be any different? The CDC has sent out information about how to stay safe with small gatherings, but as we've seen in the past, a majority of party goers haven't been listening to them.

Cdc's Recommendations On having a safe superbowl party

Hosting a Virtual Viewing Party

Like many other events over the past year, creating a virtual party is the safest way to gather. The CDC has recommended viewers to attend parties online by wearing team gear and decorating your home with team logos or colors. Instead of going to others houses and sharing food, make snacks with the people you live with and share recipes with loved ones. Many people have missed the social aspect of events, but one way you can do it at your home is by starting a group chat with a group of fans so you can talk while watching the game.

Sharing recipes

A main part of Super Bowl parties is the different kinds of food that everyone brings. This year, you can create a group chat with your loved ones so you can share recipes and still enjoy the food over Zoom. You can assign who finds each recipe and share them amongst your group. Whether you try new recipes or try to make old family favorites, sharing your recipes can help make you feel like you are still celebrating the game together. If you want to make things more interesting, you can also make it a competition. Make a list of what everyone needs to prepare and once you set up a Zoom, judge to see who made the best version of the dish.

Super bowl pool

A common tradition for many friends is the Super Bowl pool. This allows friends to compete to see who will win the overall game. In a majority of Super Bowl squares, winners are determined at the end of each quarter and winners are decided by looking at the last number of the teams' scores and matching the digits on the grid. In most cases, the square set up and the grid are made online for organization purposes, which is perfect for a Zoom Super Bowl party. There are multiple websites that help set up the grid and by sending your friend group a link, you can easily make a plan. If watching the game together over Zoom, you can discuss the scoring grid between breaks or you can create a group chat and communicate over text. Even though you are apart, discussing the game and determining a winner can by done in a variety of ways.

Attending an Outdoor Viewing Party

If hosting a party through Zoom isn't your thing, you can instead host an outdoor viewing party where viewers can sit six-feet apart. Hosting events outside allows guests to easily socially distance and allows air to flow in between them. At small gatherings, you should also limit the number of people going inside and outside for food and encourage guests to bring their own food or drinks. The CDC recommends that you should wear a mask with two or more layers that fully covers your nose and mouth at all times except when eating or drinking.
