Attempting to fill vacant positions, the Varsity Quiz team is seeking new participants after being left with four members when the class of 2025 graduated.
“The biggest challenge so far in rebuilding the team is that no one wants to join,” Varsity Quiz captain Adrienne Vera-Perez said. “A lot of people are already established into clubs, and especially because we’re recruiting now, it’s harder [later] in the year.”
The Varsity Quiz region is split into two leagues: Silver and Blue. The Silver League is for more experienced teams, whereas the Blue League is for newer teams. Since the team has new members this year, they have dropped into the Blue League for this season.
“I think moving down to the Blue League was a good decision for the team overall because last year, there were a lot of teams like Coronado High School who had a lot more resources compared to us,” Vera-Perez said. “Teams like Coronado and A-Tech would kind of just dominate the Silver League, but the Blue League, since it’s full of less established teams, is kind of a toss-up every single year. So it’s kind of unclear who’s gonna end up winning.”
Being a member requires no prior experience, students just have to be interested in answering trivia questions that vary across a series of topics. For freshman Asher Hambly, this was something familiar to him.
“I was in JV Quiz in middle school so I knew what it was like going into Varsity,” Hambly said. “I hope this experience [will] impact my high school journey by getting to know some people better [and] allow me to meet people with similar interests ”
For other members, the club has appealed to them as a way to connect with other students who have a love for trivia.
“My favorite part about Varsity Quiz is definitely the questions and the trivia, [but also] just answering the question and getting it right,” sophomore Larissa Viera said. “I’m really just a big fan of trivia. I love Jeopardy, Trivial Pursuit, anything that has to do with that.”
Students can join the team at any time; they just need to stop by H210 to pick up a permission slip from science teacher and club adviser Mary Breslin.
“My favorite part of advising [is that] they’re all really good students,” Breslin said. “They’re very enthusiastic about what they’re doing, so it’s great to see them when they’re competing, gaining confidence over time”
![Waiting to buzz in to answer a pop-culture question, sophomore Larissa Viera listens to it being asked aloud by her adviser. The players practice every other week with their teammates and go through questions together. “My favorite part [of] the team is how much we work together considering how small the team is,” Viera said. “It just feels close and it’s crazy how much we’ve gotten to know each other over such a short amount of time.”](https://southwestshadow.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/11/3683D9BC-1E24-4A28-A1FD-400F95B2FDF8.jpeg)
