Carrying on an annual tradition, the Black Student Union is hosting Winterfest in collaboration with other clubs on campus.
The event will be held this Friday from 2-4 p.m in the gym.
“Winterfest is something that brings some fun and excitement to campus throughout all the tests and quizzes we take,” BSU club president Breana Williams said. “[We would be] taking some much needed time to hang with friends and enjoy a seasonal event. It’s also very important that BSU gets recognized. It shows the school that StuCo aren’t the only planners at this school and as a minority inclusive and diversity centered club that already is under supported gives me hope that people will understand BSU on executive levels.”
Though students will experience the finished event, much of the work happens long before the doors open.
“My director of events, Hellen Beyene, and assistant director of events, Atronos Solomon, put a lot of hard work into the outline and planning of Winterfest,” Williams said. “People don’t always realize that things have to get approved, posters made, and supplies ordered. It takes time and patience, but if you are passionate and have an amazing board and team, it’s one hundred percent worth it.”
Club volunteers will be present during the event to sell food and host various games and activities.
“It takes a lot of behind-the-scenes work in collaboration with other clubs and my BSU board,” Beyene said. “We work together to pick which clubs are going to be fundraising at the event and what they’ll be doing so we can have all clubs participate and make it a fun and enjoyable event for all students.”
Winterfest is adding to the growing lineup of student organized events on campus.
“Student-led cultural events like Winterfest are important at SWCTA because they create opportunities for students to celebrate, learn from one another, and feel represented on campus,” BSU club adviser Tracy Taylor said. “These events promote inclusion, build school pride, and allow students to take ownership of their school community while showcasing different cultures, traditions, and talents.”
Taylor reflects on the students’ work in planning Winterfest, the process lasting from Nov. to Dec. 2025.
“What stands out the most is the level of responsibility, collaboration, and initiative the BSU students have shown,” Taylor said. “They have taken the lead in organizing, problem solving, and communicating with staff and peers, all while balancing their academic responsibilities.”
