The school campus will be undergoing campus renovations that will start as early as Jan. 2026. The projects will focus on Clark County School District (CCSD) policies and the prioritization of commuter safety.
The swing arm gate that is currently located in the bus lot is planned to be relocated to the west parking lot.
“[The intention] is to help better secure [the school] over the weekends,” Assistant Principal Cameron Roehm said. “[It is] also [meant] to help secure over drills and emergency evacuations, so that we can block out car traffic during those times.”
Furthermore, the field will be replaced with turf, due to water conservation concerns.
“We were not at the same level of capability of the comprehensive high schools because the gardeners are the ones that maintain the field,” Roehm said. “But we do currently have a gardener that has mowed our grass this school year already, but next year, when we have the turf, he’ll be right here leveling the pellets out periodically for the turf. It’s definitely an upgrade from what we currently have.”
During the turf replacement, the gym department has been brainstorming how to manage not having access to the field in the second semester, potentially having to utilize other spaces like the quad.
“[We will be combining classes,] so our classes might be bigger, but we’ll just have to use the spaces [like the gym in the meantime.]” P.E. teacher Paul DeSantis said. “It’s much, much better for high schools to have the turf, much easier for PE class, all overall, I would say, safer than the grass, because grass isn’t maintained. ”
For students like junior Darrian Tolentino, the reason for the turf replacement is not entirely clear.
“I’m not entirely happy not being able to use the field and I don’t really understand [the reasoning behind] changing [the field] out for turf,” Tolentino said. “[I do] think [that the turf] will make the field look neat all the time, which I think is beneficial for all kinds of school events.”
As the administrator of facilities, Roehm shares his goals and visions regarding the turf replacement.
“I would like to see the PE area hopefully become safer,” Roehm said. “Right now, there are a few drainage concerns in the grass area and an unevenness to the entire field. It would be great to see our new turf become more level and have better drainage. This would make it safer for our students and staff.”
Alongside these renovations, the campus will be receiving a new video production lab when it becomes an official program area next year.
“Right now we have a fundraiser going on,” Roehm said. “We’re hoping to raise some funds, but we do have funds set aside for it. Actually, last Friday, we brought in a video production design expert to kind of see how that person thought our life could look. Once it’s fully completed, it will look pretty, pretty neat. It’ll be a great addition to the D building.”
![Blowing his whistle, Coach Mark Bly times how long it takes his students to run a mile. With upcoming renovations, these classes will have to run their mile on the black top or alternative spaces instead of utilizing the field. “[We’re still figuring] it out,” Bly said. “We will continue to press forward and persevere [through] challenges.”](https://southwestshadow.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/12/Screenshot-2025-11-19-10.22.21.png)
