Board welcome 42 new students
National Honor Society Induction ceremony will celebrate new members

National Honor society will be holding their annual induction ceremony on Mar. 11 for new members and their parents.

“NHS induction is definitely an exciting time for us as a club and especially for our new inductees,” President-elect Gia Choong said. “Every year we’re lucky to have such revered members joining us and upholding our core values. I’m most excited about the inductee candle lighting tradition that we didn’t get to partake in last year due to the circumstances of COVID.”

The ceremony involves a speech given by the board members on the four pillars: scholarship, leadership, service and character. Following the speech, inductees will participate in the candle lighting ceremony that officially initiates them into NHS and enjoy food made by Culinary.

“I am absolutely excited for the upcoming event because it is the culmination of all of the NHS board members’ hard work and determination,” Treasurer-elect Truong Phan said. “It is one of the events that showcase our teamwork and dedication to our members, especially the new ones. I am also looking forward to eating the food because it is going to be prepared by Culinary.”

Board members are glad to be planning their first in-person induction ceremony after having done so virtually during the pandemic.

“The last time in-person inductions were held was when we were inducted our sophomore year so it’s been both very stressful and exciting at the same time,” Secretary Megan Bayudan said. “Just like the last in-person induction ceremony, I’m excited to see the candle-lighting process and even the desserts we’re giving out, but of course I’m most excited to welcome our new members and to see how they will thrive in the club in future years.”

After the induction ceremony, new members will begin participating in the meetings and can start volunteering to get a head start on their required 40 hours for the year.

“I want students to be prepared for opportunities for leadership and service in the club frequently,” NHS adviser Laura Penrod said. “We try to have educational and community service-style meetings. We hope that our new members will have opportunities to grow not only as leaders but individuals in their own academic, service, and personal journeys through school and life.”
